If someone really forced me to choose one performer and one album, here it is. Ishikawa-san is one of the truly great Enka vocalists. She pours feeling into every song until it bursts, but somehow she does so with a beautifully elegant restraint. The effect is hard to describe. She appears on "NHK Song Concert" frequently, and is adored not only by her audience, but by other Enka singers, which is a good indication of just how loved and respected she is. On stage, she moves with the grandeur of a queen. She walks slowly, with graceful measured steps, onto the stage, as if carrying a heavy weight. Then she pours every ounce of feeling she has into the song. Her performance is so intense that sometimes it can almost be painful to watch her, but very beautiful as well.

Album: Pony Canyon 00493 "Complete Song Collection Vol. 1" (Zenkyokushuu), 15 songs, 1993, Y3059, Song rating 8, performance 8 |

Here's an earlier Zenkyokushuu containing a few of her Big-big hits, plus some utterly charming and unique songs I'd never heard. One of them is marked as having been written by Ishikawa-san herself ("Whisky ga, o-suki deshou" which I'd take a chance on translating as "Here's whisky, your favorite") I believe that's a song I saw her do on TV, and it's meant to be performed as if the singer were a little drunk. That's really unusual for her, since she is naturally so regal and dignified. In general, you can't go wrong buying this album, by any means.
